SOUTH OTAGO
BALCLUTHA Ovvaba Court At Owaka on Thursday, before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., Victor H. Russell (lorry driver) and M, S. Hill (garage proprietor), of Owaka, were charged with breaches of the licensing law as applied to no-licence districts. Russell was charged as a carrier with failing to deliver liquor to the owner without unnecessary delay, and Hill with illegally storing liquor. Each was convicted and fined £l, with costs (15s and 18s) respectively. Timber Poaching Two Caberfeidh farmers (William Robert Lewis and Percy Graham Hill) were proceeded against by the Commissioner of Crown Lands for felling timber on Crown land (section 27, block VI, Woodland district). Mr G. J. Kelly, instructed by the Crown soli-, citor, Dunedin, appeared for the commissioner, and stated that the department had found, through inquiries made by an officer of the department, and the police, that the defendants had felled timber and cut therefrom approximately 250 posts, on a water conservation reserve. The timber was valued at £5, and this amount had been paid by the defendants to the department. The department believed that the trespass was unintentional and accidental, and consequently did not ask for a heavy penalty.—The defendants stated that they had crossed the boundary line accidentally.—-They were convicted and each was ordered to pay court costs (12s), and solicitor’s fee (£3 3s). Lower Costs As a result of the findings of the commission that recently sat in Dunedin to look into the question of the overlapping of lorries run by the butter factories of Otago, a big scheme of amalgamation of factories is being organised. This will mean the closing of at least one well-known factory, and the general result will, it is hoped, be a lowering of the costs of manufacture, and a payment to the-suppliers of Is OJd per lb butter-fat, as against the present lOd. The Owaka factory is to remain, with its boundaries confined, to the Gatlins district.
