OTAGO ASSOCIATION A meeting of the committee of the Otago Cricket Association was held last night. ■ Mr F. M. Binney presided. COLTS' TEAM DROPPED Mr J. A. Dunning moved that the Colts' team be not played in the Senior Competition this season. He stated that last season he had had the responsibility of selecting the team, and he had found that the clubs did not give it the support that it had received in the previous year. Chios frequently asked him to let them have the services of boys who were members of the Colts' side. The funds of the association were not as good as they might be, and to run a Colts team would' involve some expense. . Mr A. G. Valentine seconded the motion, stating that, while he did not favour one club having two teams, the Colts' team was a greater evil still. It had not helped the club spirit, and the boys had not learned to play as a The motion was carried unanimously, and it was decided to invite entries for eight senior teams. PLAY ON WEEK NIGHTS In accordance with a recommendation made at the annual meeting, Mr W A. Rowland moved— That in an two-day matches the games be played on the dates arranged, and that each side must complete one innings, the matches, if necessary, to be completed on a week night or nights. Mr Rowland said that the system had operated successfully in former years. Mr W. R. Brinsley seconded the motion. He said that in many games in which play was possible on only one of the days arranged, one side secured a decided advantage but was deprived of a win. The completion of the matches on week nights would create considerable public interest. Mr R. O. Talbot said that it was necessary to take into consideration the fact that a number of players had to attend University classes at night. Such clubs as University might have difficulty in fielding full teams on week ni Mr J. A. Robson pointed out that there might be difficulties in the preparation of wickets, and there would also be interference with club practiccs The motion was carried subject to suitable arrangements being made with the groundsmen. ■ • • _ •, , . On the motion of Mr G. R. Dickinson it was decided that all matches should be started at 1.30 p.m. NEW PLUNKET SHIELD DISTRICT The New Zealand Council forwarded a copy of a letter which it had received from the Manawatu Association proposing that a new Plunket Shield district should be formed consisting of the nine minor associations at present included in the Wellington district. It was stated that the new district would be able to field a strong side, as was shown by the fact that the country team had twice defeated Wellington. Its headquarters would be at Palmerston North. • .__ A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Binney, J. M. Fraser, Dunning, and Talbot was set up to report on the proposal. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES A letter was received from North Otago requesting that the usual match between North Otago and the, Dunedin colts be played at Christmas, a match between Otago and North Otago to be played later in the season. A suggestion was also made that a Third Grade team should be sent to Oamaru to play the North Otago JU The rS ' Southland Association also asked for a match between Otago and Southland at Dunedin early in the season and a return match later at Invercargill. ~*'♦„«. Both letters were referred to the Grade Committee. A letter was received from the Wellington Association suggesting December 25, 26, 28, and 29 as the dates of the Plurtket Shield match between Otago and Wellington at Wellington. The dates were approved. INDIAN TOUR CANCELLED Advice was received from the New Zealand Council that the proposed tour of an Indian team had been cancelled. Matters of extreme difficulty had arisen in the State of Nawangar, and had made it impossible for the Maharajah to carry out his visit. COMMITTEE OF SELECTORS It was decided by eight votes to seven to have a committee of three selectors this season instead of a sole selector, the opinion being expressed that the selection of a team was too great a responsibility to place on one man. ■ The appointment of the committee was held over until a future meeting. This would enable senior and intermediate matches to be commenced. It was decided to commence play in both these grades on October 17. NEW GROUND FOR OLD BOYS A request from the High School Old Boys' Club that it should be allowed to make Tonga Park its headquarters was granted. Representatives of the Dunedin Club, which enjoyed the sole use of the ground last season, approved of the proposal, though they frankly admitted that the Old Boys' Club might attract from the King's High School boys who might otherwise join the Dunedin Club. GENERAL It was decided that the points awarded in junior matches should be three for a win and one for a draw. The application of C. Chirnside for a transfer from the Dunedin Club to the Mornington Club was referred to the Grade Committee. Mr J. Ramsden was appointed the association's resident delegate on the New Zealand Council. Mr G. A. Martin said that it had been suggested to him that the smaller sub-associations should be invited to play matches against one another in Dunedin during the season, and that a combined sub-associations team should meet an Otago team.—lt was pointed out that there might be difficulty in securing grounds, but the secretary was instructed to write to the subassociations to obtain their views on the proposal.
