JUTE AND WOOL BRADFORD RESEARCH (From Our Own Correspondent) ißy Air Mail) LONDON, Sept. 9. Mr Broadhead, of Messrs Broadhead, Revell, and Co., Bradford, who is on his way out for the Congress of ♦'•hambfcts of Commerce at Wellington, will bektrpf informed by mail and cable about the progress made With the experiments, now being conducted at Bradford • Technical College, into flax mixed with wool to find out its reaction in the manufacturing process. A preliminary report should be issued shortly. Mr Broadhead, it is understood, will present to the congress the results of the experiments that have been conducted at Bradford. The hope is expressed that the flax tare will become a success, both technically and commercially. ~ , According to the Bradford correspondent of the Statist, Bradford opinion is that there 3s nothing superior to the present jute tare, provided the end 3 liable to become loose and find their way into the wool can be "laid" by,rubber solution or some other means; The .manufacturing properties of wool are being explored to the utmost. Machinery .has been made almost human in its manipulation of textile fibres, ahd while it is true that the burling and mending of fabrics provides a substantial amount of employment,, it is equally true that the removal of jute or other extraneous matter after a cloth has been woven Is a rather belated means of making,- ttj presentable buyers and acceptable to.wearers, it is impossible to adapt the ;ute fibre to any decorative purpose in fabrics used for any clothing as in the cas? of kemps. The former may appear only here and there in a good wcwsjg fabric, but having refused to take the dye they spoil its appe&rance. Perhaps no harm would be done by a few jute flbrefin a coarse„ tweed, particularly one in which Very kempy wool has been used to give the appearance suitable for country wear. But, gen Sly speaking, Jute fibres are mfriiders even when found in Crossbred Sool ATqualities of crossbreds are Moving popular, and anything. which can bl done to extend their use is deserving the attention of New Zealand pastoralists, NEW GUINEA GOLD SHARES (United Press AssoClaiUdn) (By Electric Telegraph-Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 5. DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE

Due in all probability to the industrial legislation outlined by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan), a particularly quiet day was experienced on the Dunedin Stock Exchange yesterday. Dominion industrials in particular were neglected bv buyers, who have shown a marked dislike to placing capital in New Zealand company shares recently. There were only three sales reported yesterday. Paid New Zealand Refrigerating changed hands at the low price of 19s, at which figure there was a further buyer on the afternoon market, with sellers threepence away. Broken Hill Proprietary rights improved a few pence with business at 2s sd. M'Leod Bros.' shares were sold at £32. but were not quoted on 'Change. Among the issues to "rise a few points yesterday were Bank of New Zealands. which improved to unsupplied buyers at £1 18s 9d, National Insurances which were sought at 18s Bd, and Australian Glass shares, which attracted buyers at £4 13s. King Solomons had a close market with buyers at 8d to 9Jd, the lowest price the issue has reached.

The following are yesterday afternoon's buying and selling quotations, which are subject to the usual broker-

MINING NEWS MINING HOUSE CONCESSIONS, LTD. The secretary of Mining House Concessions, Ltd., submits the following report of progress during September:— The monthly wash-up (No. 2) produced 13oz 13dwt of gold, valued* at £96. The mine expenditure, including mine manager's salary, amounted to about £45. MAEREWHENUA GOLDFIELDS DEVELOPMENT The secretary of the Maerewhenua Goldflelds Development Company, Ltd., reports the following Drogress for September:—The work on the mine was mostly concentrated on the Golden Gully development. The progress of the tailings through the tunnel was very satisfactory indeed, and it is estimated that 100 cubic yards per hour passed through the tunnel. All this material goes over gold saving boxes and any values contained therein are saved. Sluicing at Duffer's Gully is now being terminated, and work has been started on cleaning up the gutter and the long tail race in that gully. A partial wash-up of the boxes has produced approximately 602 of gold, valued at £43 10s, but the gold wnich is lodged in the gutter is still to be washed up. The mine expenditure for the month amounted to approximately £B6. The extension money, £124, for the month of October, in connection with the option to London, has been received. RIMU DREDGE RETURN The Rimu dredge clean-up for the period ended on October 5 for i24£ hours' digging and 56,095 cubic yards of material resulted in 216 crude ounces being recovered. t AUSTRALIAN STOCK EXCHANGES (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, Oct. 6. (Received Oct. 6, at 10.15 p.m.) The feature of the Stock Exchange to-day was strong buying pressure for Zinc Corporation shares, which touched £4 lis. These shares have advanced nearly 10s in a few days. The investment market is firmer. THE MORNING SALES

STUD RED POLLS SALE AT FOLDING (Per Uniteu Hreks Association) FEILDING, Oct. 6. Buyers representative of all parts of both islands were present at the sixth annual sale of stud Red Poll cattle at Feilding to-day, when 28 males and 33 females were offered. The demand for bulls was rather disappointing, but having regard to condition was quite satisfactory. For the females the sale was very strong, heifers specially being selected. The best type of cows and heifers made better prices than the bulls, but want of condition spoilt the general entry. Bulls sold from 10 guineas to 25 guineas, cows from 7£ guineas to 18 guineas, select heifers 20 guineas, and others from 7 guineas to 16 guineas. LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE (Per United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 6. Prices for fat sheep eased by about Is 6d a head, and those for fat cattle about 15s a head at the weekly Lorneville stock sale to-day. The yardings, particularly that of fat sheep, were big, but there was little outstanding quality. The interest of one or two northern buyers steadied the uncertain fat sheep market, which would otherwise have dropped much more. The cattle entry was a big one and included more bullocks than have been yarded for some sales past. There were practically no prime quality heavy-weight cattle penned. Good quality handy-weight bullocks brought from £ll 15s to £l2 15s; lighter weights, from £lO to £11; and unfinished, from £8 to £9. Good quality cows realised from £9 15s to £lO ss; medium quality, from £7 15s to £8 15s; poorer quality, from £6 to £7, and inferior, down to £4. Good quality handy-weight heifers brought from £8 10s to £9 7s 6d; lighter weights, from £7 5s to £8; and unfinished, fron> £5 15s to £6 10s. The fat sheep yarded comprised the biggest entry for at least a month, wethers being particularly prominent. Most of the yarding was of medium quality. The market was firm at the start, but it fell away and did not recover fully. Prime heavy wethers brought up to 37s 6d; good quality medium weights, from 32s 6d to 345, lighter, about 30s; and smaller and unfinished, 25s 6d to 27s 6d. Prime heavy medium ewes broughl up to 325: prime heavy-weight, from 28s 6d to 30s; medium quality, from 25s 6d to 26s 6d; lighter, 18s 6d to 20s; and poorer sorts, down to 13s.
