TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel | N.Z. Cup Trial The Wellington Trotting Cup is offering a stake of £350 for its New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap to be decided at Hutt Park at the end of this month. This represents an increase of £l5O on the amount given last year. The class has been extended to 2min 45sec. In Need of Experience The American-bred trotter, Fantine, has breeding behind her, for she is by Guy Abbey from, Olive Fant. She has plenty of speed, but she will require | a i good .deal of • racing: experience be fore she can be regarded as a betting proposition. Her trainer, R. B. Berry, has the virtue of patience with his trotters and pacers, and he may yet win. a race with the imported mare. A Deserved Tribute . After filling the presidential chair of the Winton Trotting Club since 1921 Mr Adam Baird, who recently, resigned through ill-health, was met by the cbmmittee members of the club and presented with a wireless set, as a slight -token of appreciation o' the great service he had rendered the club. Mir Baird has been an enthusiastic president and through good times and bad has rendered yeoman service to' the Winton Trotting Club. A Useless Rule For some time past special lease forms for trotting horses have been supplied by the New South Wales Trotting Club office, and in certain instances owners and lessees have mutually agreed that the rental for the use of the leased horse shall be greater or less than that stipulated in the printed forms (one-third of ill first prize money won by or awarded to the. animal concerned) The committee of the club has'now decided that any alteration made to the form concerning, prize money will not be recognised or enforced by this club. Proxy Voting and Police Procedure in the election of the new committee for the Southern Tas-. manian Trotting Club has caused discussion and some coTifusion among followers of the sport. The position was explained by Mr V. S. Wicks, who was elected secretary when the first committee was formed He stated that the meeting called was for one purpose only, to alter the constitution in accordance with instructions from the Commissioner of Police '.ColoneJ J. E. C. Lord) by eliminating proxy tion the membership list would be listed. Immediately the commissioner approved the new or altered constitution the memberships list Would be thrown open for seven days and any person over the age of 21 years would be'eligible to join.: After the membership list, had closed, each member would be notified by circular letter that nominations for the committee would be received until a certain time, and that the election would take place at least three days after the receipt of nominations. If an election were necessary scrutineers would be appointed. A Loss of Form When Chechahco made an exhibition of the field in the Wainoni Handicap at New Brighton on September 5 it appeared that he had regained the speed for which he was noted when trained in Southland. The racing at New Brighton, however, was on a sodden track, and it may have been the inability of the other starters to handle the going (says the Press) rather than any outstanding brilliance on the part of Chechahco that enabled him to score such an easy win. ' This view was confirmed by the running in the Meth ven Cup, for while Chechahco made a good beginning and raced in a handy position for a mile and a-quarter, he failed to make any further Imnression on the leaders. His driver. R. B Berry, was flicking him with the whip half a mile from home, but Chechahco was then a well-beaten horse. As the times show, the track was hard and fast, and the former Southland pacer may do better when the sting is out of the ground. He claims an engagement at New Brighton on Saturday next.
