PUNISHMENT IN SCHOOLS
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—The question of corporal punishment in schools is mainly a question of finance. It is the unreasonable demands made upon both pupils and teachers that makes physical torture necessary in public schools. The child-mind is naturally alert to absorb knowledge, provided that knowledge is presented in a natural way. But the hurried and worried teachers have neither time nor apparatus to make their subjects sufficiently interesting and entertaining to their pupils. So the strap is required as an antidote to the apathy and antagonism of pupils who find their tasks uncongenial, if not absolutely impossible. Alore, teachers and more and better apparatus would solve most oi the difficulties of education, alike for teachers and pupils.—l am, etc., Retired Teacher.
