NATIONAL DAIRY CONFERENCE

CONSIDERATION OF REMITS MUTUAL INSURANCE SCHEME (Per United Press Association) NAPIER. June 18. The National Dairy Conference continued its sittings at Hastings to-day, members listening to addresses by Dr E. Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Air AV. M. Singleton, director of the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture.

The following remit, moved by the Westmere Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., was carried: —"In the absence of information as to the Government’* method of the marketing and distribution of our dairy produce, and to ensure that dairy companies retain that goodwill for their respective brands which has beenbuilt up over a period of years by consistent good quality, this conference urge* on companies that the present brands be used in conjunction with the Dominion brand.”

Another remit was carried—“ That the question of milk grading be referred to the director of the dairy division in order to remove some of the anomalies which exist.”

The following remit, moved by the Kokatau Co-operative Dairy Company, was carried:—" lu the event of a premium being paid on grade, the grading should be clone where the produce is sold, and there should be only two grades.” The conference adopted the mutual insurance scheme prepared by the special committee appointed at the conference last year. The following is a summary by the committee of the terms which would be offered to dairy companies and their suppliers for insurances effected direct with Lloyd's underwriters through the office of Bennie S. Cohen and Son (N.Z.), Ltd., acting as insurance brokers on behalf of the industry:— 3. Individual dairy companies would deal with (he nearest branch or agency of Bennie St Cohen and Son (N.Z.), Ltd. We have an assurance from this firm that if .the' exigencies of the business offering should prove a sufficient inducement they will favourably consider the establishment of additional branches or agencies to give more effective service to the industry. . 2. Individual factories supporting the scheme would supply brokers forthwith with particulars of their current insurances so that the necessary policies would be in readiness to operate when the current insurances expired. _ In this connection we have had explained to us the routine methods followed by Bennie .S. Cohen and Son (N.Z.). Ltd., in dealing , with insurances, and those members of the committee who have been handling this class of work for many years were agreeably surprised, to observe the expeditious manner in which the routine work was handled. In comparison the present method?.,appear cumbersome and expensive. This is an aspect which will make a special appeal to dairy company secretaries. .. . ■ , 3. The proposals which'have been submitted by Lloyd’s underwriters through Messrs Bennie S. Cohen and Son (N.Z.), Ltd., enable the committee to put forward definite recommendations as to the rates to be charged for fire insurance to factories and suppliers. _ We draw attention to the fact that in the table of rates we have made provision for » sum to be placed to reserve. This amount would be paid by the insurance broker* into a fund established in the name* of trustees appointed by the industry.
