TRADE WITH JAPAN
DESIRE TO EFFECT TREATY AUSTRALIA OFFERS INDUCEMENT (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) CANBERRA, June 16. (Received June 17, at 0.20 a.m.) As an inducement to Japan to reopen trade treaty negotiations, the Commonwealth Government is prepared to transfer Japanese goods from the general tariff division to the intermediate division. This would reduce the duty on Japanese rayon from 9d to 8d a yard, and on cotton piece goods by a fartbing all round. Australia is aiso prepared to undertake to ensure that Japan retains at least half of her present textile trade, while facilities will also he afforded for Japan steadily to expand her Australian trade as a good customer country.
