The engagement is announced between Margaret, youngest daughter of the Rev. W. F. and Mrs Craigie, of " Belmont," Ratanui, and John Edward, eldest eon of Mr and Mrs Earnest Pitches, of Ophir, Central Otogo.

Last evening, in the Otago Women's Club lounge, the Ex-High School Girls' Club held its June meeting. Miss P. M. Allan presided, and, after welcoming those present, thanked all who had actively helped in making the annual ball last week the success it was. Four papers were then read on " Women of Other Lands " —" Russia," taken by Miss Marion Robertson; "Finland," by Miss Margaret Matheson; "Turkey," by Mrs T. D. B. Paterson; and " Canada," by Miss Moana Green; all being very instructive and showing unusual and educational aspects of the countries concerned.

Yesterday morning Miss F. J.. Ross was hostess at a morning tea party, when Miss Bina Addy met the members of the committee responsible for arrangements for the forthcoming recital on Monday nest. Music lovers of this city are to have_ an opportunity on that occasion of hearing Miss Addy sing modern Indian compositions by the famous Rabindranath Tagore, as well as English and Scottish ballads and negro spirituals. It was reported that Miss Mary Frazer had consented to assist with pianoforte solos and that Misses Muriel Ironside and Julia Holmes would give help with instrumental work and accompanying. The committee responsible for arrangements include Mcsdames Richard Hudson, H. C. Campbell, ard R. T. Little, and Miss Irene Barth, together with Miss Ross and the general secretary.

Last evening the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall was completely changed in character by means of a decorative scheme of blue and gold—the colours of the Dunedin Police Force, the members of which were having their first annual ball. Under the direction of Mr Hill, a fringe of streamers in broad, pointed bands of blue and gold hung around the walls and along the gallery, surrounding the lamps in a fluted cylinder and forming a star across the ceiling. Easy chairs were arranged below the stage, and the stage itself was artistically adorned with greenery. The ball was one of the most successful held this season. The guests of the evening were Senior Serjeant Packer and his wife, the latter of whom, wearing a gown of floral taffeta, was presented with a bouquet by Miss Boulton. Others in the official party were Superintendent Cameron; Inspector O'Halloran with Mrs O'Hnlloran wearing black lace with a shoulder spray; Sergeant Boulton with Mrs Boulton in Lido embossed velvet and gold lame; Sergeant Forsyth, Constable O'Shaughnessy and Miss M. Hastie, the latter in rose pink taffeta and gold trimming; Constable and Mrs Hansen, the latter in brown satin and lace: Constable and Mrs Brooks; Constable and Mrs Harris(Middlemarch); Constable and Mrs Buchanan (Balclutha). the latter in flame satin; Constable M'Dougall, Detec-tive-sergeant Hall, Detective Russell and Detective Le Sueur. Supper was served in the stipper room, which was charmingly arranged with balloons and special floral decorations. During the evening a song and dance were given by Miss M'Clatchy.
