AT WINGATUI
A slight frost was in evidence at Wingatui on Saturday morning, but did not effect the state of the going, which is unusually firm for the time of the year. The inside grass where the horses have been working for some lime is a bit bare and dries quickly. The course proper has a good coat of grass which holds the moisture from dew and, although firm, the going is devoid of sting. A continuation of the existing weather will provide good going for the meeting. The Smuggler worked once round the tan at threequarter pace and now bears an improved and muscular appearance than prior to his northern trip. Valenta ran six furlongs in Imin 21 3-sscc when carrying over nine stone. Half Note did strong work without being extended. Salmo Salar, Golden King, Grand Finale, and Gambler’s Luck began at the nine-furlong post on the grass and covered the distance in 2min ssec. the last seven in Imin 37sec. Gambler’s Luck dropped back in the run home and the others finished in fairly close order without anything being anxious to win the gallop.
Vantoon was going better than loreador at the end of seven furlongs on the tan in lmin 34 1-osec. Araboa, Darien, Costume, La Dora, Night Wind, and another broke away at the six furlong post on the grass. Araboa was in front at the finish in lmin 21 l-ssec, and with Night Wind did best in the gallop. Drink Up and The Jeweller covered six furlongs on the tan in lmin 21 2-ssec. Poinard pleased more than Tautau Maid when doing fix furlongs in lmin 24 l-sscc. _ , Dissemble, Hula Belle, Darinc Deed, Amy Johnson and others got through useful work. _, ~ Red Lance (Anderton) and Te Almarangi (Cooper) were schooled over the sod wall, stand double and post and rails. Red Lance was an excellent schoolmaster for Te Ahuarangi, who shaped well for a novice.
