NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, June 13. The winter meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club was one of the most successful in the club's history. The conditions were ideal, there was a wonderful attendance, and large fields provided some great racing, while the totalisator figures jumped to £23,341 under the win-and-place system, compared with £14,336 10s with the single pool last year. Gay Crusader was the early leader in the Longbcach Handicap, with Great Linnet, Lord Ernleigh, Patty Todd, Swift Guy, and Braemar handy. At the end of three furlongs Swift Guy went on from Lord Ernleigh and Great Linnet, ivitb. a gap to Guy Hugo, while Debutante was moving up. Racing for the straight, Guy Hugo joined Swift Guy in the lead, Guy Hugo going on to win easily by three lengths from Great Linnet, who beat Lord Ernleigh by two lengths. Patty Todd was next, then Swift Guy and Debutante. The winner paid a big dividend on the same course two months ago. He is a speedy sort when going right. The American mare Fantine was one of the lot that did not go off properly. Several of the competitors in the Trial Handicap went off in a tangle. Lord Axworthy led out from Buddy, Serene Bingen, Elite Rey, Ann Pointer, Temeraire, and Poste Haste. After two furlongs, Buddy rushed to the front, Ann Pointer, Lord Axworthy, Serene Bingen, and Elite Rey heading the bunch behind him at the mile post. Buddy and Poste Haste were in charge five furlongs from home, where Fine Art had taken third place, with Renown's Best moving up. Renown s Best shot to the front when the straight was reached and won as she liked. Fine Art beat Reymere by three lengths for second, with Lord Axworthy, Elite Rey, Maltravers, Rollalong, and Poste Haste close up. The winner, a very smart three-vear-old, was narrowly beaten by Royal Doulton on the same course a week ago. De Soto broke badly at the start of the ABhburton County Handicap, losing about 50 yards. Waress went out from Young Frank and Peter Locanda, while, after half a mile, Young Frank joined Waress in the lead, Peter Locanda being handy, while De Soto had taken fourth place with a fast run, Grace M'Elwyn, Francis Lincoln, and Raydus being next. Young Frank took charge at the mile post. Cloudy Range made a forward move a little 'further on, and five furlongs from home he joined Young Frank in the lead, De Soto and Peter Locanda being at the head of the others. Cloudy Range drew clear when the straight Was reached and beat De Soto easily by three lengths. Peter Locanda was three lencths away, stalling off Taxpayer by a head, with VVaress and Francis Lincoln next. Cloudy Range, a winner also at Addington a fortnight ago, is now in the best class, and is not at the end of his improvement. De Soto paced a great race after Ins bad break at the start. The New Zealand Sapling Stakes, the only two.-year-old race in the Dominion, aroused great interest, the 12 starters coming in for a lot of attention. Peter Bee and Lord Worthy broke at the start, while Zincali went off slowly. Becky Direct led out from Loyal Pat and Irisco Boy, with Donald Dhu, Parisienne and Southern Chief next at the end of a furlong. There was no change along the back. Loyal Pat and Frisco Boy headed Becky Direct at the six-furlong post. Zincali moved up a little further on and was with Loyal Pat in the lead when the straight was reached, Frisco Boy being handy, while Parisienne and Southern Chief were moving up. Parisienne then put in a fast run, taking charge a furlong from the post and winning easily by two lengths from Frisco Boy, while Southern Chiei, finishing strongly, was a length and a-half away. Half a length back came Loyal Pat, beating Zincali by a head, Eliice Parrish being next. The winner, by Rey de Oro, is trained by R. B. Berry, This wus her first success, though she had been placed in fast time. She is a brilliant filly, and she stays. Frisco Boy went a good race, and so did Southern Chief, though the last-named was made to cover a lot of ground on the turns. All the same, he may be going off, after a hard season's racing. There was a mix-up aj; the end of two furlongs in the Acton Handicap. Incliff fell, Golden Mist falling over him, while more than half the field suffered interference. Going on from there Wild Dreams was showing the way to On Parade and Grcenmantle, with Village Guy, Rare Rey and Racketeer next. They ran like this to the straight, where On Parade shot to the front and won easily from Wild Dreams, who beat Village Guy by three lengths. Rare Rey. Racketeer and Greenmantlc followed at intervals. The performance of On Parade was attractive, but Grcenmantle disappointed, as he had every chance. Discord was in front all the way in the Mayfield Handicap. King's Guard and Raelaim followed her early, with a cap to Fifa, while Norma Bingen, Bessie Parrish and Sea Gift were moving up. King's Guard broke half a mile from home. Norma Bingen and Bessie Parrish followed Discord to the straight, Bessie Parrish going on to be second, with King's Guard third, then Raelaim, Sea Gift and Norma Bingen. This was Discord's fifth win in the last few months, and she is on the way to good trotting class. Gaillard, a hot favourite, paced a good race in the Tinwald Handicap, but had to be content with second place. Harlequin set the early pace, with Repeal, Royal Palm, Civic, Casanova, Vanity Fair and Lucky Jack. After half a mile Repeal joined Harlequin in the lead, Civic heading the next bunch, while half a mile further on Ace Pot, Casanova, Vanity Fair and Royal Palm were at the head of the others, with Gaillard and Our War moving up. Casanova shot to the front when the straight was reached, with Gaillard in hot pursuit, but Casanova held on to win by two lengths. Lucky Jack finished well, two lengths back, Llewellyn's Pet. Red Flush and Our War being close up. Casanova, carrying the Durbar Lodge colours, is a Wrack three-year-old, now trained by L. A. Maidens. He is a solid customer, liable to be much better next season.

The Winter Handicap brought a pood day's racing to a close with a wonderful finish. Marie Celeste headed Wise Guy after a furlong. Noble Prince, Subsidy and Golden Cross being handy. Noble Prince took second place leaving the straight, Subsidy, Wise Guy, Golden Cross and Big Author being next nt the mile post, with Rongomai moving up. Two furlongs further on Big Author had lost his position, while Rongomai had taken fourth place, behind Marie Celeste, Noble Prince and Subsidy. There was no change to the straight, where Marie Celeste retired, Noble Prince going on from Subsidy and Rongomai. The lastnamed pair gradually overhauled Noble Prince, who lasted long enough to beat Rongomai by a neck, Subsidy being a head away. Half a length back Rocks Ahead beat Morello by a neck, these two finishing strongly. Big Author, the favourite, was not dangerous over the last halfmile. Noble Prince has run a lot of good races this season, and is on the way to good class.
