THE TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE UNEMPLOYED.

to rilh EDITOIi Sir,—Your report of the Taieri County Council's last monthly meeting conveyed to the reading public the righteous wrath of councillors because, as they maintained, the Employment Board was endeavouring to convert the council into a benevolent institution. Anyone conversant with this public body and with its officials would, no doubt, suppress laughter at the ludicrous statement.

Other ratepayers will agree with me regarding the following statements: —(1) The Taieri County Council found it unnecessary to replace a surfaceman (removed by death) because unemployed labour paid by the Unemployment Board was available. The surfaceman mentioned has. I understand, been dead three years, and his wages for that period would have been in the vicinity of £540. This sum constitutes a nice little present from the Employment Board—or would councillors call it a Benevolent Board? (2) Unemployed labour has re-formed miles of road and cleaned scores of miles of ditches. (3) The major portion of the work done under No. 5 Scheme for the.Taieri County has been maintenance work. (4) The Taieri County Council has never supplemented the wages or given extra time to men employed under No. 5 Scheme. I challenge any or every member or official of the Taieri County Council to disprove the above statements. —I am, etc.. Grosse Tete et Peu de Sens Mosgicl. June 8.
