TENSION BETWEEN PROVINCES

Replying to a question in Hie House of Commons on the Far Eastern situation, Viseount Cranhorne said that signs of tension had recently appeared in the relations between the south-western provinces of China and the Central Government, but there seemed no sufficient reason at present to lake an alarming view of the position. Regarding smuggling in North China conversations had been continued between hie Majesty’s representatives in Japan and China and the Governments to which they were accredited, 'lhe Japanese Government had despatched an official of the Foreign Ministry to examine the situation on the spot. Viseount Cranhorne added that he understood that the Japanese garrison in North China was being reinforced, but he was unable to give the actual figures.

APPEAL TO KWANGTUNG LEADER SHANGHAI, June 9. The Tokio correspondent of the Daily Herald says that Sir Frederick Leith Ross, in a lengthy conference with Mr Arita, urged Anglo-Japancse co-opera-tion in a loan for the benefit of China.
