SAFETY ON ROADS
TO THE EDITOR
Sir. —Mr Semple states that he wants to take the people of New Zealand into his confidence and make the roads 100 per cent. safe. What nonsense! No roads will be safe until drivers of motors are prohibited from taking liquor whilst in charge of their vehicles. About three months ago Mr Semple stated that “he was not going to stand by heedlessly while people were being murdered by drunken motorists, and this would have to stop.” Since these statements were made I have been watching with interest for the introduction of some legislation dealing with this matter, but, like the rest of politicians, Mr Semple is all bluff, and the Labour Party is not as bravo as it would make people believe. It resembles proceeding Parliaments—all afraid of the wealthy liquor naity. A few deaths through drunken drivers do not really matter, but brewers’ profits must not be interfered with!—l am, etc., Observer.
