DESTRUCTION BY DEER
DAMAGE TO BUSH AND CROPS INTENSIVE DESTRUCTION PLANNED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 17. “The increase in the number of deer in New Zealand and the damage they are doing are beyond dispute,’” said the Minister of Internal Adairs (Mr W. E. Parry) in the course of a statement. “They can definitely be stated to he a great menace to onr bush areas, and to the crops, in certain localities. I have arranged with the Department of Internal Adairs for the heads of the deer-destroy-ing parties now operating in the south to come to Wellington to discuss a plan of operation for future work of destroying deer. There are several problems in the way of extending these operations. One is the problem of obtaining an increased amount of money for the work, and another. the question of obtaining and training the men to do it. There can be no denbt that the men undertaking (he work require training. I am hopeful that, as the result of the conference to take place, it will bo possible to extend the plans upon which the department has been working in the past.
