WELLINGTON RACING CLUB

AUTUMN MEETING CONCLUDED WILD CHASE BEATS CUSTOS JOCKEY DIES FROM INJURIES (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, March 17. The Wellington Racing Club concluded its autumn meeting in fine weather. There wae a large attendance, and the track provided good going, but the pleasure ol participating in the racing was marred by the death of the jockey Roy Reed as the result of a fall from Hunting Cat in the President’s Handicap. A thrilling finish was provided by the Challenge Stakes field, in which horsemanship decided the result. Spiral won the President’s Handicap decisively at the finish from Argentic, who finished very fast but too late. Big Dook was galloped on during the race, and this may have caused him to stop at the finish, but he must have been placed if ridden right out. Maine won the Champion Hack Handicap Cup like a stayer, as he came from last to first in a fairly fast-run race. Taumau drifted into a bad position, and was finishing fast in the straight, but too late.

Kcrcatu won the Suburban Handicap from the two outsiders in the field. Knockfin settled her chance at the start. Earl Colossus was elected favourite in a good-betting race on the Ngaio Highweight Handicap. When the field settled down Court Anna, Bacchus Marsh, and Chile were showing the way, and Summer Hill joined the leaders rounding the top, where Court Arama dropped back. At the distance Earl Colossus and Summer Hill were challenged by Chile, who came on to win by a length and a-half from Earl Colossus, who led Summer Hill by three lengths. Bacchus Marsh was next, and followed by The Image. Birthday Party was made a good favourite for the Plunket Nursery Handicap. but she had to be ridden out to beat Double Gift by half a length. Birthday Party, Double Gift and Liane were the early leaders, and the first-named was going well until 100 yards from home. Double Gift kept the favourite busy at the finish, and Deficit drew up to finish a fair third. Top Notch was also doing well at the finish. Pelmet is a bit oil colour, and has temporarily lost her dash. Gustos was made an odds-on chance for the Challenge Stakes. Silver Streak got out on the move and beat the youngsters off the maik by uncouple of lengths. Gustos and Wilcl Chase ran past Silver Streak after going a couple of furlongs, and then the favourite went out to the front. Racing round the top Gustos was over two lengths in front of Wild Chase, who was the same distance in front of Silver Streak. Wild Chase closed on Gustos two furlongs from home, and they came on together stride for stride. In a thrilling finish Wild Chase won by half a head. Silver Streak was two lengths away, and Jubilee Song well back. Gustos bad none the best of it at the finish, ns Wild Chase was close to him and did not give Wilson full play for Ins whip. The stronger rider just made the difference between winning and losing. Silver Streak looked dangerous when he commenced a final run inside the last furlong, but failed to jeopardise the chance of the two-vear-olds. Queen of Song was taken out of the President’s Handicap. Argentic was favourite in betting well spread over the field. They got off to a good start, and in the back when passing the mile post Tnnneller bad taken charge from Big Dook, Hunting Cat. and Spiral, with Senior last. Tnnneller led to the far turn and Hunting Cat fell near th ■ sixfnrloug post. Tnnneller led round the top from Sir Nigel. Rig Dook, ami Spiral and Argentic was moving up. Once well in line for home Big Hook took charge, but inside the distance Spiral shot through to the front, and stalling off a late run from Argentic, beat him by three-parts of a length. Korero finished strongly in third place, but was lucky to get there

as Big Book would have beaten him if ridden out. Morris dropped his hands on Big Book a few strides from the post. Sunee and Might were next to the first four. , „ The full card went out for the Champion Hack Cup Handicap, and it was one of the best betting races of the meeting. Nightlass took up the running from Prince Reno and Pukeko. and they led into the back stretch. Nightlass led along the back from Prince Reno, Pukeko, and Riptide, with Maine last. Nightlass was still in charge coming round the top from Bungarvan, Pukeko, Onewhetu, and Riptide. Bungarvan then took charge from Riptide, and Maine was making up ground. Maine got to Bungarvan a few strides from the post and wore him down to win by a head. Riptide was over two lengths away, followed by Onewhetu, Taumau, and Pukeko, with Ingenuity next. Maine put up a good performance, and so did Taumau, ns he came round from the tail of the field three tin longs from home. , Passion Flower was a strong order tor the Hutt Handicap. She and Lady Graceful held up the start. The favourite appeared to get into trouble and failed lamentably at the finish. After Money and Prostration led from the far turn, where the favourite got into trouble. After Money stalled off Prostration and won by a short length, with Lady Graceful the same distance away, just beating Passion Flower, who looked light and jaded and not presenting the appearance of something worthy of being made a strong favourite. . Rereatu bad a strong following for the Suburban Handicap. Knockfin got badly away, and Invoice was a bit slow to move. Fulojoy, Lordly Knight, and Acceptable led to the course, with Rereatu close up. Knockfin made up ground, but had a hopeless chance. Rei-catu waited in behind the leaders, and Haut Monde improved his position. Rereatu made a good response, and drew up to win h> half a length from Lordly Knight, who heat Haut Monde by the same distance. Acceptable was close up fourth, witn Queen of Song and Invoice next.
