ST. KILDA BOROUGH

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council wag held last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow). Crs G. Glue, W. J. Davidson, J. H. Hinton, R. S. Brent, T. D. B. Roy, N. D. Anderson, J. C. Cherry, W. J. Lovell, J. A. Carman and W, • Rutherford. Before the start pf the meeting the new Mayor (Mr Marlow) and Cr Carman, who were elected at the by-election held last week, were sworn in by the Deputy Mayor (Cr Glue), who extended a welcome to them. The Mayor and Cr Carman thanked Cr Glue for his welcome, and expressed the desire to do all in their power for the good of the borough. TRIBUTE TO DEPUTY MAYOR. On the motion of Cr Anderson it was resolved to record the council’s appreciation of the services rendered by the Deputy Mayor ' (Cr Glue) as Mayor during the past six months. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that during the past two weeks receipts totalled £759 12a Id, and that after the payment of accounts amounting to £8532 there would be a credit balance of £6259. Cr Anderson, chairman of the Finance Committee, moved the adoption of the report, and in doing so stated that the financial position of the borough was very satisfactory and quite as good as last year. He also moved that £2OOO be deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank and that a similar amount be placed on fixed deposit with the National Bank of New Zealand, The motion was seconded by Cr Glue and carried. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The foreman reported that since the last meeting the penetration and sealing of eight chains of Victoria road had been carried out, iu addition to the patching of streets and footpaths, cleaning of mains and mud tanks, and sweeping of channels. Because of wet weather only five days’ scaling had been carried out during the past fortnight. The foreman * suggested that for the ensuing fortnight the following work be carried out; —The finishing of Forbury crescent roadway, the scaling of the Victoria road footpath, the sealing of the Gilfillau street footpath, and the penetration of Victoria road as far aa the petrol tax was available. This would complete the sealing allocated for this season. —The report was adopted. WATER CONSUMPTION. During the past two weeks the water consumption of the borough was 3,588,000 gallons, at a cost of £B9 14s, compared with £95 7s Od for the preceding fortnight. LICENCES ISSUED. Ten motor drivers’ licences, nine heavy traffic licences, one building pei;mit, one hawker’s licence, and 13 dog registrations were issued during the past two weeks, according to the borough inspector’s report. GENERAL. The town clerk (Dunedin) advised that the Public Works Committee had been authorised to improve and pave portions of Forbury road, St. Clair, on the north side between Victoria road and Coughtrey street, and on the south side between Bedford and Valpy streets. The St. Kilda Homo Economic Association was granted permission to use the local lodge hall for its monthly meetings, extending till October. On the motion of Cr Anderson it was decided to ask the borough inspector to submit a report on overhanging trees and encroaching hedges. Cr Hinton reported that because of the recent by-election the committee appointed to consider the proposal of reconditioning or renewing the borough’s water mains had been unable to meet, but it was hoped the recommendation promised would ho available at the next meeting. It was decided to forward a letter of congratulation to the St. Kilda Municipal Band on its performance at the recent band contest.
