PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE
BURKES-ST. LEONARDS REPORT
The report of the Burkes-St. Leonards Progressive League, which_ will be presented at the annual meeting on Thursday next, states inter alia:— While the matters requiring the committee’s attention during the year have not been exacting, they have nevertheless been of some importance to the district. The construction of a bowling green would be a great asset to the district, and throughout the year the committee has given the matter consideration. If it were possible to secure necessary financial backing, it is thought that a green would be largely patronised by the residents. The committee approached the Harbour Board regarding the half-tide wall at Burkes Bay, and the residents, especially those living in the vicinity, are grateful to the hoard for erecting the wall, thus bringing to an end the disconcerting odours which were constantly in evidence, especially on hot summer days. Wet Area in Front of Store.—Considerable efforts have been made regarding the matter of water in front of the store, and deputations waited on the Railways Department and Borough Council with the object of having this objectionable water area, partially or wholly filled in, and the had bend at this point of the road straightened It is hoped that the council will do something at an early date. In response to the committee’s request nameplates have been installed on a large number of streets. This has proved oi great convenience. Much correspondence has passed with the Railways Department in an endeavour to secure petrol driven cars and cheaper train and bus fares, hut so far nothing has been done. The committee hopes that the department will some day realise that it would he to its advantage to more adequately cater for this district. Ihe bathing beach is still a great source of enjoyment and recreation to the residents of the district and others. The diving board and platform have been icpaircd. and just before Christmas two punt loads of sand were deposited. The committee has been busy devising means by which the sand could he retained. A working bee met on the site on a recent Saturday afternoon and formed two low walls with sand bags, and it is hoped that at least in a temporary way a method has been secured by which the sand can he prevented from drifting away. As .Mr Middleton has definitely decided to relinquish the office oi secretary and treasurer, the committee desires to place on record its very warm appreciation ol his untiring and efficient service.
