SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Games Postponed Cold, showery weather caused a postponement of all cricket fixtures in South Otago on Saturday afternoon. High School Sports The annual sports of the South Otago High School were commenced, at the school grounds on Saturday forenoon, and a number of heats were run off. In the afternoon, however, the weather prevented the finals being run, and it was decided to postpone the sports until a favourable day this week. The afternoon was devoted to games and dancing in the assembly hall and afternoon tea. Garden Party A garden fete to have been held at the grounds of Mr and Mrs John Sinclair s residence at Kosebank in aid of the funds of the Methodist Church was also marred by the weather, and only part of the programme could be carried out, the rest being postponed until next Saturday. Strange Insect At the Balclutha Sale Yards on Friday a farmer noticed a strange insect crawling up his sleeve. In appearance the insect was quite formidable looking, with a shell-like beak masking a pair of wings. It was examined a number of farmers, but none could identify it, and it was variously stated to be a new variety of sheen tick or a specimen of the Chilian saw-fly recently introduced to the North Island to combat bidi-bidi. It is unlikely that either of these guesses was correct. v Gatlins Lake Mr J. A. Roy, M.P., has received advice from the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) that the Public Works Department will investigate the proposal to drain the Gatlins Lake for farming purposes. It is estimated that an area of 1400 acres could be converted into rich farming land. The lake, so-called, is formed by the junction of two rivers (the Gatlins and the Owaka), and it is believed that the area would readily yield to the modern systems of drainage. Lamb Sale At a special sale of lambs held by the Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association at Owaka, 3000 lambs were sold under the hammer and 700 sheep. Fat lambs made from 20s 9d to 255, fat and forwards lambs, 17s to 21s 3d; mediinh lambs, 14s to 16s; culls. 10s 4d to 14s 10d; wethers, to 21s 6d; fat ewes, to 15s 9d; twVtooth ewes, from 30s Id to 325; sound-month ewes, to 21s 6d; store ewe lambs, to 20s 4cl; failing-mouth ewes, from 12s 6d to 14s Od; cull ewes, from 0s to 10s Cd. Most of the lots went to outside buyers, and the Railways Department made special arrangements for the conveyance of the sheep after the sale.
