KAITANGATA Returned Soldiers’ Association The annual meeting of the KaitangataStirling branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Friday evening, when Mr William M'Ghee presided over a good attendance of members. The balance sheet, which showed that the association’s finances were in a good position, was adopted. The following report of the years activities was read and adopted:—lt might reasonably be claimed that the year has been a satisfactory one in every respect, particularly in the direction of what has been accomplished for those in need of assistance. The executive can claim to have responded to every appeal for help. On occasions it would have been a pleasure to have done more, but such was impossible with the funds available. The following are the particulars of membership for the years 1934-35 and 193536; —1934-35: Ordinary members 98, honorary active 4, honorary social 4; total 100. 1935-36: Ordinary members 103, honorary active 4, honorary social 8; total 116. It will be observed that there has been a slight improvement. There are, however, still a few returned men in the district not in the association, and a special effort should be made to interest them in the organisation. If by becoming a member one can help another broken in health, or a dependent in distress, surely it is worth while. The greater the membership the greater the power for good. The Returned Soldiers Association was largely responsible for the War Veterans Allowance Act, 1935, and recent amendments to the War Pensions Act. The former Act will be of untold value to a large number of the servicemen who are unfit for permanent employment. Authority was recently given to admit as members of the association persons who served in or with the British mercantile service, or on transports in war rones, and rvho have been awarded the British war medal, and either have been honourably discharged, or are awaiting honorable discharge. It is regretted, however, that these men are not yet eligible to receive assistance by way ot work from the Poppy Day or Canteen Funds. It is pleasing to report that the financial position of the sub-associations is entirely satisfactory. There is, however, some cause for concern regarding tne payments of subscriptions. Many members do not seem to realise that subscriptions are due and payable on April 1 annually. It should be clearly understood that the association is most generous in the cases of those who, through misfortune, are temporarily unable to meet their obligations. It is nevertheless obvious that it is only by the prompt and constant. payment by the majority that the association can function at all. Members should realise that. It has been possible further to consolidate the position of the Relief Fund created during the last financial year. The income from tne_ hall showed a decided improvement, anu the executive directed the transfer to the Relief Fund of a substantial portion ot the surplus. Anzac Day services were held at Stirling and Kaitangata, and were even better attended by the public than was the case in the previous year. Representatives of the sub-associations were enabled to assist in the service conducted at Benhar. Mr F. B. Adams (Dunedin) proved a most acceptable speaker at burling and Kaitangata, and the sub-associa-tion is most grateful to him for his assistance. /The Poppy Day figures for the year again showed a slight increase. The total for 1934 was £35 11s 6d and for 1935 £36 3s 6d. Once again it is desired to mention the work of the lady helpers of the sub-association. It is almost entirely due to their efforts that the returns are maintained at such a satisfactory level. Authority was given for the. constructing of a roll of honour for erection in the Northern Cemetery. The sub-asso-ciation is indebted to a member who carried out the work, material only being a charge on the fund. The local Borough Council willingly granted permission to erect the roll in the cemetery grounds, and the sub-association is grateful for this concession. A 10-ton truck of coal was again sent to Dunedin for distribution to unemployed members of the association. This action was much appreciated in Dunedin It may at this stage be mentioned that although the sub-association tries to b*e generous in assisting the general relief activities outside the town the grants from Dunedin for its own relief purposes decidedly exceeds the total sent away. The following officers were elected for the incoming year:'—President, Mr William M'Ghee (re-elected); vice-presidents —Messrs Campbell, Wallace, and Moreley; secretary, Mr M. A. Carson (re-elected); treasurer, Mr T. M'Kinney (re-elected); auditors, Messrs Wylie and Blackburn (reelected) ; General Committee—Messrs Whitson, Brown, Pennell, Hancock, Pilling, Sharman, Wylie, Bichan, Bowmar, Bennie, Stanway, and J. It was decided to ask Brigadier-general Stewart to give the address at both Stirling and Kaitangata on Anzac Day and that the Kaitangata Pipe Band attend at the parade at the hall at .Benhar and Stirling, in addition to heading the parade at Kaitangata. The date of the annual reunion was fixed for Saturday, May 2.
