Miss Oliver presided at a meeting of the Pleasant Point branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Before the meeting commenced, members stood in sjlence as a mark of respect to the late King and in sympathy with the Queen and members of the Royal Family. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Thomas in her recent bereavement. Miss Oliver reported that the work of the market and Provincial Committees was satis factory. Mrs Oliver gave a talk on " How' to make useful articles of furni ture tout of petrol cases," and received a, vote of thanks. The competitions resulted:—Best flower. Mrs Lyon 1, Mrs Roberts 2; taller variety, Miss Oliver 1; bowl flowers, Mrs Lyon 1, Miss Lyon and Miss Oliver (equal) 2; bottle of small fruit, Mrs Lyon 1, Miss Oliver 2; arrowroot sponge, Mrs Lyon 1. Mrs Thoreau 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Kingston and Lyon.
At the Weston branch meeting Mrs Burdett presided. The roll call was "A good school lunch." Mrs G. Brightwell gave a demonstration on quilt-making, and was thanked by Mrs Harvey, on behalf of the members. The hostesses were Mesdames Kilpatrick and Kitchen. The competition, "A folded serviette," resulted as follows:—Mrs I. Mitchell 1, Mrs J. Kitchen 2, Mrs Park 3, and Mrs C. Campbell h.c.
The first meeting for the year of the Cromwell branch was held in the Anglican Hall. In the absence of the president (Mrs Thomas Smith) Mrs Webb took the cbair. It was decided to eend a letter of sympathy to Mrs V. C. Yeoman in her recent iilness. A presentation was made to Mrs T. Phillips, who was leaving the district. Mrs Phillips suitably replied. On Friday members of the Cromwell branch met at the residence of Mrs J. R. Webb to welcome the visiting North Otago farmers and entertain them to morning tea. Before the arrival of the visitors Mrs J. F. Smith, on behalf of the branch, took the opportunity of presenting Miss Evelyn Smith, who is shortly to be married, with a jug and wishing her every success in the future. Miss Smith suitably replied. Mrs T, Smith welcomed the visitors, and a morning tea was served in the sitting room and on the verandah, after which a pleasant half hour was spent in the beautiful surrounding and Mrs Webb's orchard. A pleasing feature of the function was when Mrs William Bell, the oldest member of the branch, presented her fortieth grandchild. The visitors left later for Hawea Flat, where lunch was served.
