The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) returned to Dunedin yesterday after attending the annual conference of the Municipal Association at Napier. Mr A. Den Hertog, managing director of Philips Lamps (Australia and New Zealand), Ltd., is at present visiting New Zealand. He has recently returned from a world tour of investigation into the latest developments in television. A British Official Wireless message from Rugby states that Lord Beatty’s condition, though grave, has slightly improved. The health of Mr C. J. M’Kenzie, Under-secretary for Public Works, has improved to such an extent that it is expected he will be able to return to Ins home in Wellington from a private hospital in Greymouth some time next week. Notification of the following transfers has been received by the district traffic office of the Railways Department:—Mr J. J, Barnes, clerk, Kurow, to clerk Cavcrsham; Mr H. W. J. Veal, clerk, Caversham, to clerk Timaru; Mr W. J. Wilson, clerk Timaru. to clerk Kurow; Mr F. V. Deuehy, clerk Ranfurly, to clerk goods office, Dunedin: Mr A. V. Gale, clerk railway telegraph office, Dunedin, to clerk Ranfurly.

The Union airliner Kotuku left Taieri airport at 11.30 a.m. yesterday, the only passenger from Dunedin being Miss C. Urcn, booked for Christchurch. The southbound airliner Korimako reached Christchurch at 11.5 a.m., but was unable to leave for Dunedin owing to the adverse conditions at Taieri aerodrome and approaches. It is anticipated that conditions will clear sufficiently to enable the Korimako to leave Christchurch at 0 a.m. to-day for Dunedin, and to leave from Taieri ns usual at 11.30 a.m. for Christchurch, Blenheim, and Palmerston North.

Prior to his departure from Karitane, Mr C 5. Burton, headmaster of the. local school, was entertained by the Puketane Men’s Club and presented with a handsome bronze reading lamp. Mr T. Houghnu, founder of the club, in making the presentation referred in fitting terms to Sir Burton’s successful efforts in guiding the education of the children of the district, Mr D. Harper, on behalf of the Maori people, added a few words in a similar strain. Mr Burton made a suitable reply. A toast list was heartily honoured,* and during the evening songs and other items were contributed by members of the gathering. Mr W. M'Cosh (president) occupied the chair.
