OBITUARY

M. JEAN PATOU PARIS, March 8. The death is announced of M. Jean Patou, the dress designer. MR CHARLES WARD RAROTONGA, March 7. The deatli is announced of Mr Charles Ward, aged 80, an old identity of the Cook Islands. He first visited the islands in 1881, and took an active part in hoisting the Union Jack at Rarotonga in April, 1890, resulting in the islands becoming a British protectorate. He was born at Bolton, Lancashire, in 1856. He leaves one son. The funeral took place to-day, and was largely attended by Europeans and Maoris.
