CONTRACT BRIDGE

OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY An interesting contract bridge match was played in Dunedin during the weekend, when a team drawn from Otago players met a representative Christchurch team, there being eight players a side. The meeting, which constituted the first match of the kind played in Dunedin, was in the nature of a return match, an Otago team having travelled to Christchurch a few months ago, when a close game resulted in a win for the Dunedin players by a small margin. The duplicate system of play was used. Briefly, this means that a series of hands are played by one team of two players from each team, and the cards arc not gathered into tricks as is usual, but are turned down, and kept in front of the players. At the conclusion of the hand the result is noted, and the four hands are kept separate, to he handed over to the other tables, where the same cards are played, iho hands that were played by one team, however, are now played by their opponents, and luck is eliminated. The Christchurch team comprised Messrs W. Mitchell, A. Gudgeon, R. Ashworth and Mesdames Gudgeon, Lavor, Gcddes. Loughnan and Morgan. The Dunedin team consisted of Dr J. H. Fulton, Messrs N. Allan, R. W. Matheson. G. Fulton. 11. Finlay. F. Turner. W. Thomson and B. Wilson. After 9G hands had been played it was found that the Dunedin team was 3700 points ahead of its opponents, and the local side was therefore declared the winner bf the contest.
