AN ANCIENT OFFICE

It is understood that the ancient office of Governor and Constable of Edinburgh Castle, which has been in abeyance since the middle of last century, is to be revived. General Sir Archibald R. Cameron, G.0.C., Scottish Command, will be the holder of the office, and an official announcement will be made shortly, states the Daily Telegraph. The question of reviving the office was raised in the House of Commons last June by Mr J. C. M. Guy, M.P. for Central Edinburgh. The two offices of Governor and Constable were formerly separate. The older was that of Constable, which is believed to have been instituted in the twelfth century by King Alexander I. The Countable had charge of the garrison at the castle, and, along with another high official, supervised the tournaments and trials by combat held at the base of the Castle Rock. Governors were first appointed early in the fifteenth century.
