MARRIAGE CEREMONY IN DUNEDIN The celebration in Capetown of the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs E. M. Jarvis possesses an interest for Dunedin in the fact that their marriage took place in this city, the officiating clergyman being the Rev. Dr Salmond. Shortly after they were wedded Mr and Mrs Jarvis left New Zealand for Victoria, and in 1896 they departed from Melbourne to try their fortunes in South Africa. On the day after they arrived in that country Mr Jarvis secured employment with a company in Capetown. It was a two-day job and he gave notice at the end of the first day. But he was persuaded to return on the second day and remained with the firm for 341 years. Illness forced him to retire in May, 1930, and since then he has been living on pension from the company. Mr Jarvis is an elder of the Presbyterian Church of South Africa and takes a keen interest in church and mission work. In 1916 he joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade, for which he has been an active worker ever since. He is now divisional superintendent of the Emmanuel Ambulance Division at Wynberg and has received the Long Service Medal and Bar. Mr and Mrs Jarvis were among those who went over to England in 1931 with the contingent of St. John Ambulance nurses and men who attended the centenary celebrations in London. Mr Jarvis is a trustee of the Merchants' Sports Association in Capetown, is at present in charge <> r the Wynberg Caddies' Social Club an secretary of the Pinelands Boy Semi'.--Local Association, and is chairman <■ the Woodstock Public Library. During the Boer War she collected funds for the soldiers' entertainments. Later she joined the Capetown and Suburban. Clothing Guild and was a vice-president of the Salt River Group for 25 years and president of the same group for five years.
