WOMAN FIRE-RAISER
SENTENCE OF THREE YEARS COMMENT ON JURY'S RECOMMENDATION. (Per United Press Association) WANGANUI, March 5. Air Justice Ostler to-day sentenced Florence Alberta Birss, aged 29, married, of Ohakune, to three years' imprisonment with hard labour for setting fire to a dwelling. His Honor said it was difficult to know what to do with a woman in her condition, and the jury had complicated the matter somewhat by a recommendation to mercy. It was obvious that the jury did not know the whole facts. Certain evidence, which lie had thought was admissible, had been excluded in order to give her the fairest trial possible. He had little doubt that she had caused two other fires and had terrorised the neighbourhood by her threats of li res.
