“ART IN AUSTRALIA”
In its royal blue jacket with neat lettering, the February issue of the quarterly Art in Australia makes a very effective entry. Nor do its contents disappoint expectations. The frontispiece, a reproduction of a head in brou.se by Epstein, is striking. Several other coloured plates, excellently reproduced, are . included, of which particular note may be made of "The Mosque of Abdul, by Lionel Lindsay, and a panel illustrative of woven and printed materials shown at the annual exhibition of the Society of Arts and Crafts, Sydney. In this number Lionel Lindsay is revealed as a water-colourist, and the reproductions, mainly of scenes captured in Morocco and the East, show his fine draughtsmanship, and the boldness and fluency of his style. The portrait of “Banjo” Paterson by Mr John Longstaff, awarded the Archibald Prize for 1935, and other exhibits in that competition provide a most effective illustrative series which confirms the impression that Australian art is strong in portraiture, i Comment by Lionel Lindsay on these works lends an added. interest to their depiction. A Russianborn artist in Sydney is Daniel Vassilief, examples of whose work are shown. It is modernistic and • vigorous... An uncommonly interesting illustrative feature of the number is provided in representations of decorative panels for the Cunard liner Queen Mary by the sculptor Maurice Lambert, the actual designs being carried out in gilded bronze, the success of this work is unquestionable. On the literary side the magazine presents an article. “ Modern Art and the World of Appearance, by Adrian Lawler: a commentary by Alleyne Zander on the Exhibition of Chinese Art in London; William Moore’s “At Home and Abroad”: ami other matter.
