OVERSEAS LEAGUE

MEETING OF DUNEDIN BRANCH A meeting of members of the Dunedin branch of the Overseas League was held in,the Y.W.C.A. Assembly Hall on Monday evening. _ The president (Mr W. R. Brugh) occupied the chair, and there was an exceptionally large attendance of members. Before commencing the evening's proceedings, the president referred to the Empire's areat loss in the passing of his Majesty King George V, patron of the Overseas League, and said that the King had been an example to his Empire as a man with an open mind, a pure heart, an eager intellect, an unveiled spiritual perception, a brotherliness for all, and a constant eye to the ideals of human progress. He had taught thaji the world could only be softened by'human love, manifested in self-sacrificing service, and that man's life was not dependent upon outward circumstances so much as upon, the inner thought and the condition of mind and spirit. Mr Brugh moved the following resolution, which was carried: " : We, the members of the Dunedin branch of the Overseas League, desire to sympathise with the Royal Family in their grief at the loss of King George V, our revered patron. Whilst we are in grief at the death of our Sovereign, yet we thank Almighty God for the favours He bestowed upon him in enabling him to rule so wisely his great and important Empire. He was not only a beloved monarch, but each and every one of,;hia subjects revered him as a personal friend. He was most fortunate in havinc that sympathy and affection from his devoted consort Queen Mary, which enabled hira to surmount many difficulties. To her must be given the great credit for the example of having a model home and family, and we grieve with her in her sorrow. In offering our sympathy to our new monarch in his grief at the loss of a loved father, we assure him of a sincere loyalty and homage, and we pray that his reign will be blessed with ail happiness and prosperity." Signor Giovanni Stella then sang MasseneP s "Elegie" in memory of the dead Sovereign, all present standing in silence* Miss A. M. Stops, a visiting member from the Overseas League headquarters, London, was the principal speaker of the evening, and gave an. interesting address on the women's institutes in connection with her Empire tour, and the various branches of the Overseas League visited in her travels.
