JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS OTAGO COMPETITORS PROMINENT TWO RECORDS BROKEN (From Our Special Reporter) HAMILTON, January 26. Easy victories by S. W. Jarvis and Miss Isla Purdie at the New Zealand intermediate and junior championship meeting, which was commenced at Hamilton to-day, gave the Otago team a good start for the War Memorial Shield. The weather was beautifully fine and warm, and the well-filled benches of spectators witnessed some keen and, at times, spectacular racing. During the day two records went by the board, the 100 Yards Junior Girls and the 220 Yards Intermediate Girls’ Freestyle, new figures in the latter event being established by the speedy Otago swimmer Miss Purdie. In her heat Miss Purdie won as she liked in 2min 50sec, and it was generally conceded that with someone to stay with her she could do even better in the final. And so it proved, but surprisingly her strongest opposition did not come from the title-holder, Miss D. Symon. of Southland, who completely failed to reproduce her form of Inst year, but from Miss L. Gitlieb (Wellington). For the first 100 yards the Wellington girl was on even terms with Miss Purdie, but in the fourth lap the Otago swimmer began to forge ahead. Her opponent’s stroke became somewhat laboured, but the further Miss Purdie went the more effortlessly she swam, and, drawing away, she won comfortably with 11 yards in hand. Her time, 2min 50Jsec, lowered Miss E. Champion’s record, which had stood for six years, by 1 4-ssec. Jarvis had an easy win both in the heat and the final of the Quarter-mile. The heat proved more or less of a saunter for him as the other competitors in the event were hardly in his class, and the Auckland champion, A. Pascoe, won the second boat equally easily. Prior to the evening session speculation ran high as to what would happen when the pair came together in the final. Otago supporters were confident in Jarvis’s ability to withstand any challenge that the Aucklander might throw out, while Pascoe’s team mates and their friends were just as certain that the champion’s long line of successes was at last to be broken. The first 100 yards was thrown behind in 64 4-ssec, and for the first eight laps the two swam level. The rest were not in the picture. With 300 yards covered Jarvis began to assert himself, and commenced to draw ahead until, at the end of 400 yards, he had a bandy advantage. Over the final 40 yards he put in a great spurt, and although Paecoe responded gamely, he could not get near the Otago lad, who touched with 10 yards in hand.

Perhaps the sensation of the day was the astonishing speed shown by the diminutive ]3-year-old Maori junior girl, Mias Nawi Kirs, who, in the 100 Yards Championship, not only clipped 2-ssec off the New Zealand record in the heat, but in the final turned in 67 l-ssec—l 2-ssec under the figures registered in 1933 by Mies D. Symou. It was expected that Miss M. Black, the Auckland junior champion, who, prior to the meeting, had been registering fast times, would take this title, but she was no match for the flying girl from Rotorua, who won easing up by six yards. The victory was an immensely popular one, and on her form of to-day Miss Kira would appear to have a mortgage on the 50 Yards Junior Girls' Championship, and to be capable of setting up a fresh record for this distance also, B. Ingram, Otago’s representative in the 75 Yards Junior Boys’ Breaststroke event, was pitted against opposition much too strong and _ experienced for him, but he swam pluckily, and, although beaten, was by no means disgraced. Otago swimmers competing on Monday will be S. Jarvis (200 Yards Boys’ Freestyle), -Miss W. Dunn (75 Yards Intermediate Girls’ Breaststroke), G. P. Chambers (100 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Breaststroke), Mias J. Thomson (50 Yards Junior Girls’ Freestyle), C. Eekhold (Intermediate Boys' Dive), and Miss D Pope (Intermediate Girls’ Dive). Present indications are that Otago is certain of another three, if not four, points. . Points for the shield are now: Otago 2, Wanganui 1, South Auckland 1, Wellington 1.
