WAIMATE Increased Building Activity An increase of over 50 per cent, on the value of buildings erected in 1934 is shown in the figures for the past year, although the number of building permits issued by the Waimate Borough Council was actually five fewer than in 1934. However, 12 dwellings were built last year as against seven in 1934, and the average value of dwellings erected in 1935 was £660, compared with the average of £559 in 1934, The value of buildings erected was £9040 last year, compared with £SBOB in 1934. After the showery condition* which prevailed during November the weather set in dry early in December and it was not until the 30th of the month that any appreciable rain fell. The total rainfall was only .82 inches, as compared with 1.80 inches in December, 1934. Rain fell on six days last month, as compared with 15 days in December, 1934. Train Passes for Pupils To reach some finality on the question of allowing high school pupils to travel free on the railway bus to Waimate, representations are being made to the Government by Mr D. Barnes, M.P. for Waitaki. At present free passes are allowed for pupils to travel to Timaru, but they must pay Is Cd per week to travel on the bus from Studholrne to Waimate, although they travel free by rail as far as Studnolme. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Competition Winner Mr R. Matheson has been announced as the winner of the fat sheep competition at the Gore Pioneer Athletic Club’s sports, Mr Matheson guessed 12441 b, the correct weight being 1241 b. Personal Mr A. R. Williamson, of Gore, has been appointed an agent of the T. and G. Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd., at Milton, and will leave to take up his new position in a few days’ time. Mr C. W. P. Edgar, formerly of the Magistrate’s Court staff at Cromwell, has taken up his duties at Gore, where he has replaced Mr H. M. Kennedy, who has been transferred to Invercargill.
