POLICE COURT At a sitting of the Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs R. Milligan and A. W. Woodward, J.P.’s, Albert Victor O’Neil was charged with the theft at Omarama on January 13 of a coat valued at 22s 6d and a sports jacket valued at 30s, the property of Patrick Cooney. He was-further charged that being a steward on a ship he deserted from the ship at Dunedin on May 14, 1935. Constable J. Patterson, who conducted the police prosecution, said that the accused deserted from a ship in May of last year, and wandered about the country looking for employment, eventually being engaged by Mr Taylor, of Omarama. He occupied a hut with Cooney, and took possession of the articles mentioned and left the farm. The accused was taken in charge by Constable Waring on Monday >at Oamaru. and he admitted the offence. Constable Patterson asked that on the charge of deserting his ship the accused be remanded to appear at Dunedin tomorrow. On the charge of theft the accused was sentenced to three days’ imprisonment in the Dunedin Gaol, and on the charge of desertion he was remanded to appear at Dunedin. PORT OF OAMARU High Water. —January 15: 7.45 a.m. and 8.6 pm. The Wainui is due Oamoru on Wednesday, January 22; to load for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, via Timaru and Lyttelton. , The Karu is announced to load at Oamaru on Thursday, January 16, for Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth. The Waikouaiti left Sydney on September 27 for Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru, Lyttelton, and Oamaru. She is due at this port this morning. The vessel has transhipments ex the Kitano Maru, Orama, Tanda, Comorin, Morelia, and Tajandoen. The Poolta loaded coal at Westport on Saturday, and sailed for Wellington, Timaru, and Oamaru. She is due here on Friday, January 17. ‘ The Wingatui is expected to clear 1 Auckland on Friday, January 17, and will bring sugar and general cargo for Oamaru, being due at this port on Monday, January 21. The vessel will load for Wellington and Auckland, via Timaru and Lyttelton. ' GENERAL NEWS The total number' of traffic licences issued by the Oamaru Borough Council for the 12 months ended May, 1935, was 1166, and so far for the current year 1204 traffic licences have already been issued. This is an increase of 38 on last year, with, four more months still to go until the end of the current year. In the Southern Lawn Tennis Subassociation’s competition the match between Kakanui and Weston, played on the latter’s courts, resulted in a win tor Kakanui by 13 sets to 11. By courtesy of the Oamaru Aero Club, passenger flights will be conducted in Mr W. M. O’Hara’s Klemm Eagle monoplane at’the Alma aerodrome on Friday, January 17. The proceeds will be devoted to, relieve distress among ex-servicemen. Mr O’Hara will arrive at the aerodrome by air at 2.30 p.m. on Friday, and the charge for flights will be 5b per passenger.

WAIAREKA SALE FAT CATTLE. There was a large yarding of fat cattle at yesterday’s sale at the Waiarcka yards, and prices were on a par with those ruling last week. Some good steers sold on account of A. J. Sheat (Windsor), brought up to £7. A heifer realised £6 ss, and the top price for cows was £6 2s 6d. North Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association, sold: For a client, 1 cow £3 17s 6d; G. Bradfield (Ardsrowan), 1 heifer £6 ss; a client, 1 cow £2 15s; Mrs M. M. BOROUGH RATES ' The ratepayers of Oamaru are reminded that the last day for the payment of borough rates is Saturday, February 1, after which the 10 per cent, penalty will be added. The rates struck for 1934-35 amounted to £21,780 lls lOd, and the amount collected up to and including January 13, 1935, was £5944 3e 7d, leaving £15,830 8s 3d outstanding. The rates struck for the current year amounted to £22,061 lls 3d, and up to yesterday. £5988 lls Id had been collected, leaving £16,073 0s 2d still outstanding. It. is very gratifying to note that this year’s figures compare more than favourably with last year’s. THE RAINFALL Late yesterday afternoon the rain, which commenced in Oamaru late on Monday morning, had not abated, and had reached even greater severity. Up to 9 o’clock yesterday morning 70 points of rain had been recorded in Oamaru by Mr William Forrester, and. a further 33 points were registered during the day up till 4.30 p.m., making a total of 1.03 inches for the period since thd rain commenced. The rain will do a great amount of good, and was very welcome after the prolonged dry spell. Although harvesting operations in some parts may be held up, the rain will prove exceptionally beneficial to the growth of grass, green feed, and root crops.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE AWAMOKO-GEORGETOWN. Mrs D. Kennedy occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the AwamokoGeorgetown branch of the Women s Institute. Mrs Baker (secretary of the Waituna Institute) was among those present. After the singing of the institute ode, the creed was read by Mrs Elder. Miss Ledingham was appointed delegate to the North Otago Federation meeting, to be held in Oamaru on April 3 ’Letters of appreciation were received from the Oamaru Public Hospital, Health League, and Mrs Poison, sen., for Christmas gifts. Motions of sympathy were passed with the Poison family and Mrs A. G. Mills. , „. . . During the roll call, An economical summer drink,” the majority of the members showed the true economical spirit by suggesting cold water. The competition, “A jar of gooseberry jelly," was won by Mrs Aitchison, with Mrs 1 ncker second, and Mrs Kennedy third. Mesdames Morrison and Baker kindly acted as judges. A demonstration on the making of wool flowers and leaves suitable for decorating, shopping bags, cushions, etc., was given by Miss Kennedy, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Morrison had charge of the social half-hour, and both her competitions created much amusement. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Smart and Fricker. PERSONAL The Rev. A. H. Nordmeycr, M.P., returned from the south last night, after investigating conditions of work on the Milford Sound road construction scheme. E- Smith (Invercargill), Mr A. Robinson (Timaru). FUNCTION AT LIVINGSTONE A pleasant evening was spent at Livingstone when a number of local residents assembled at the home of Mr R. M'Quade to do honour to his daughter, Elvia, who was recently married to Mr Cuthbert Murray, of Christchurch. The function was in the nature of a surprise party, and each person brought a gift. Later in the evening, Mr H. Lory, on behalf of the Livingstone residents, presented the young couple with the gifts, and wished them every happiness and prosperity in the future. Mr Murray, on behalf of his wife and himself, thanked all those present for their gifts and good wishes. An enjoyable evening was spent in games and music.
