CAUGHT IN FALL OF GRAVEL WORKMAN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES. (Per United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, January 14. John Dawson, aged 49, of Gorge road, was killed this afternoon through being caught in a fall of gravel in a pit. With his son and two other men, Dawson was filling gravel from the Gorge road pit into a lorry, backed against the gravel face, which was 19 feet high. The face suddenly gave way on one side of the lorry, catching Dawson and another workman named George Duncan. The latter jumped aside, and, though caught about the legs, escaped unhurt. Dawson tried to evade the falling gravel, but was almost covered. Ho was soon extricated, but died within 10 minutes. LORRY AND CAR COLLIDE (From Our Own Correspondent) GORE. January 14. A fivc-seater sedan car driven by Mr W. H. Sheiffelbene, of 214 King Edward street, Dunedin, collided with a motor lorry driven by Mr P. A. Johnston, 250 Selwyn street, Christchurch, at the north boundary bridge at Mataura yesterday afternoon. The front of the lorry was smashed. Mr Shoiffclhcne was accompanied by his wife and three children, who escaped serious injury. Mr Johnston was the only occupant of the lorry, and was not injured.
