THE NEW FARMAN PLANE PARIS, January 13. The new F 224 Farman plane includes a number of experimental trapdoors to enable passengers to escape quickly in case of emergency. Parachutes are fitted to all seats, and it is claimed that everyone will be able to jump out of the machine without delay in the event of trouble. LONG-DISTANCE FLIGHTS LONDON, January 13. Regarding the report of Air-commodore Sidney Smith, commanding the Royal Air Force in the Far East, which communicated strong views to the Air Ministry concerning the control of long distance flights, following Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s death, the official opinion is that little can bo done beyond the issue of permits for flying over foreign countries. The suggestion that pilots should rigidly adhere to announced routes is fine in theory, but impracticable in practice owing to climatic conditions and mechanical defects often making changes of routes necessary.
