TRADE WITH JAPAN
SHIPPING FACILITIES EXTENDED direct service in may (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, January 13. Tributes to the Osaka Shosen Kaisha, the Japanese steamship line which has pioneered direct trade between New Zealand and Japan, were paid to-day at a reception held on board the company’s motor vessel Sydney Maru. The occasion marked the extension of the company’s service to include South Island ports, the Sydney Maru being the first Japanese vessel to adopt this itinerary. Reference was also made to the inauguration next May of a direct service without intermediate calls at Australian ports.
Captain Nomura said that in adding Dunedin and Lyttelton to the usual itinerary his vessel had established another link in the service rendered to New Zealand business interests by the Osaka Shosen Kaisha. A further link would be provided with the establishment of a direct service in May which would be the result of the pioneering work carried ont by his company over the past five years. The direct service would place New Zealand in a position to compete with the prices quoted by Australian merchants on the Japanese market.
