SHIPPING STRIKE

THE INTER-STATE VESSELS CREWS OF SIX GIVE NOTICE (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 13. The crews of six inter-State vessels, including one passenger ship, gave notice upon their arrival in Sydney at the week-end. No attempt is being made to despatch the ships with volunteer labour until the results of to-day’s meeting of the Seamen’s Union ar.i known. The owners anticipate that a move will be made at the meeting to lift the ban on coastal vessels. MINERS TO COLLECT LEVY SYDNEY, January 13. (Received Jan. 13, at 10 p.m.) At a mass meeting of striking seamen to-day delegates from inter-State ships asked to be allowed to go back to work, claiming that by remaining in employment they could do more by means of a levy to assist the strike than by remaining idle. However, with only one dissentient, the meeting reaffirmed the general strike decision. Representatives of the Miners’ Central Council reported that the miners had decided to collect a levy of 2<l- per cent, on the next two pay days, the proceeds to be devoted to the assistance of seamen and miners who are now on strike. The miners’ delegates also assured the meeting that their members would not hew coal for ships manned by licensed seamen. CONFERENCE IN MELBOURNE MELBOURNE, January 13. (Received Jan. 14, at 1 a.m.) A conference of the Federal unions affected by the Strike and the Emergency Committee of the A.C.T.U. discussed the suggestion that the A.C.T.U. headquarters be transferred to Sydney for the duration of the strike. While it is possible that the conference may decide to hold a meeting in Sydney it is not considered likely that there will be any change in policy of the unions, which is against extending, the dispute. It is felt at the Trades Hall that if the conference is held in Sydney it will be to discuss terms for a resumption of work.

The system of permitting applications for seamen’s licences by post, which was introduced in Sydney last week, is now being applied to Melbourne.
