THE WAIPORI TUNNEL
COST OF THE DEVIATION It was complained by Cr M'Millan, M.P., chairman of the Electric Power and Lighting Committee, at the meeting of the City Council on Monday night, that. a heading in the Daily Times to the fortnightly report of the committee was calculated to lead the people into a false belief concerning the cost of the proposed deviation in the Waipori tunnel.
"It seems," Cr M'Millan said, "that our local press is determined to hoodwink the people. In this morning's paper there were big headlines stating that the deviation would not involve any extra cost. That, of course, is ridiculous, for the deviation will cost the council £SOOO or £6OOO extra."
The following is an extract from the committee's report, the adoption of which was proposed by Cr M'Millan, as its chairman: —
"From the point of view of cost, it would further appear that the deviation will, if anything, effect a slight saving in cost, compared with the cost of completing the tunnel on the present line." It will be seen, therefore, that the heading, of which Cr M'Millan complained, simply stated the terms of the committer's report. If there was any "hoodwinking" it was obviously not on the part of the Daily Times.
