AMATEUR SWIMMING
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR EVENTS. Three further events in the Otago junior and intermediate swimming championships were decided at the Municipal Baths last evening. Particular interest centred in the two backstroke events, as this was the first occasion since the championships were instituted that races of this description had been included in the programme. As on the previous evening, entries were poor, excepting in the 100 Yardu Intermediate Boys' Backstroke Championship, in which four competitors faced the starter. Following are the results: — 50 YARDS JUNIOR GIRLS' BREASTSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. Title-holder: Miss C. Knowles (K.), 40 2-ssec. Miss N. Cameron (Balclutha) .. .. 1 Miss M. Stewart (Zenith) .. .. .. 2 Miss P. Mundie (Kiwi) 3 Only starters. The race early resolved itself into a tussle between Miss Cameron and Miss Stewart, the latter, who is only 11 years of age, pushing her bigger opponent every inch of the way. Miss Cameron had a slight lead at the turn, and, although Miss Stewart challenged over the final 15 yards, she could not catch the leader, and Miss Cameron got home by a foot. Time, 49 l-ssec. 75 YARDS JUNIOR BOYS' BACKSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. B. Ingram (Dunedin) .. 1 D. Leckie (Dunedin) 2 These were the only starters. Leckie
showed the way in the initial stages of the race, butlngram put out a great effort over the last 20 yards and gained the decision by a touch. Time, 72 l-ssec. 100 YARDS INTERMEDIATE BOYS' BACKSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. S. W. Jarvis (Dunedin) 1 K. Leckie (Dunedin) .. ... .. 2 T. Wallace (Dunedin) 3 Also started: J. Clulee (Kiwi). Won by two yards, with seven yards between second and third. Time, lmin 17 3-ssec. TO-NIGHT'S CARNIVAL Three Southlanders have entered for the Otago intermediate and junior swimming championship carnival at the Municipal Baths to-night. These are D. Davis (who won the 220 yards intermediate boys' title at Invercargill in 2min 35sec), A. C. Millar (Southland intermediate 100 yards champion), and P. M'lnnes (probably the fastest junior boy Southland has yet produced). M'lnnes should win the junior 100 yards, but D. Leckie is bound to give him a good race, while the New Zealand champion, S. W. Jarvis, should be extended by Davis over 220 yards, in which a fine race should be witnessed. Jarvis has been swimming in fine form, and fast time may be expected. The same applies to the 100 yards intermediate boys' breaststroke championship, in which a fine contest should be witnessed between H. Callender and G. P. Chambers, two of the best exponents of the stroke in the Dominion. The intermediate girls' 100 yards should produce fast time from Miss I. Purdie, who swam so*well to win the 220 yards on Monday night, but there are five other competitors in what should be a good race. The four-a-side relay champion- r ship of Otago will be decided, and also the intermediate and junior diving . championships.
