A BROKEN NECK
MAN KILLED INSTANTLY UNUSUAL TYPE OF ACCIDENT Unusual circumstances surround a fatality that occurred at 12.40 on Saturday morning, as a result of which David Andrew Smaill Tait, a casuai employee on the railway works at the new Puketeraki deviation, was killed instantaneously. The accident occurred at one of the bins by which the spoil removed from the hillside is fed through sliding horizontal doors at the bottom of the containers to the empty trucks below. It appears that Tait was examining a leaking gland when the doors opened and he was caught between one of the sliding panels and a beam. His neck was broken and his skull was fractured. The deceased, who was a married man, aged 27 years, resided at Karitane, and his relatives live at Gore.
An inquest was opened on Saturday morning before the coroner, Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. After evidence of identification had been given the proceedings were adjourned sine die.
