PALMERSTON School Sports The local District High School held its annual sports last week, some very fine performances being given by the pupils. An accident occurred during one of the races, W. M'Leod being badly spiked in the foot by another competitor beside him. He is progressing favourably. The cross-country run of approximately three miles to three miles and a-half was won by R. Johnston, with Snook (3min) second, and Badcock (2|rain) third. Time, 19min 20sec. Johnston, Pope, and Snook made the fastest times. The 100 Yards Sprint was won by M'Leod (3yds), with Fletcher (;fer) second, and M'Dougall (ecr) third. The 880 Yards Race was won by M'Dougall (scr), with Heenan (24yds) second, and Pope (scr) third. The 440 Yards was also won by M'Dougall (scr), with Pope (scr) second and Heenan (12yds) third. Three men off scratch —M'Dougall, followed by Fletcher and then Pope—took the honours in the 220 Yards. The placings for the Long Jump were: Fletcher (scr), 17ft lin, 1; M'Leod (2ft 2in), 2; M'Dougall (scr), 3. The High Jump was tied for by Pope (scf) and M'Leod (4in) with equal jumps of 4ft Sin. M'Dougall and Arnold tied for third place. The Herbert Smith Trust Cup, for the best all-round athlete in football, tennis, cricket, and field events was also tied for by R. Pope and J. M'Dougall. Lawn Tennis The Dunback B Grade tennis team travelled to Palmerston last Saturday to play a round of the competition. The home team was successful in winning by 14 nets to 2. The A Grade match was postponed. Cricket

The Macraes cricket team also visited Palmerston, and was successful in winning by 106 for eight wickets to 23 runs. Bating for Macraes, Sutherland made 37 not out, Ockwell 11, Griffin 13, and M'Gregor 27, while for the hom e team no double figures were made. For Palmerston Dalgleish took four wickets for 52, Fletcher one for 20, Osborne three for 30, and for Macraes M'Gregor took four wickets for 13 runs, and Griffin five for 10. The following are the results of lawn tennis matches played in the Waihao Lawn Tennis Sub-association's competition, on Saturday in C Grade: —St. Paul’s defeated Studholme by 10 sets (83 games) to 6 sets (65 games). Ikawai defeated Morven by 12 sets (95 games) to 4 sets (65 games). Friendly matches resulted: St. Patrick’s 10 sets (91 games) defeated Glenavy 6 sets (84 games); High School 10 sets (75 games) defeated Hook 6 sets (64 games); Ikawai 11 sets (84 games) beat Glenavy 5 sets (60 games). General There is an abundance of feed for all stock at the present time. Grain crops are looking well, and the prospects of a good crop of turnips are excellent. Turnip thinning is being proceeded with, while shearing is in full swing. Lambs have done remarkably well, and large drafts will be ready for the freezer much earlier than last season. There has been quite an active business done in hill lambs during the last few weeks for forward delivery, and all lines of any magnitude have been disposed of at from 16s to 18s.
