PROFITABLE WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED

TO THE EDITOR.

Sib—What is the new , Government, when we get one, going to give the unemployed to do? Labour promises employment for everyone at good wages. The other parties promise almost as much. Now, I would like to make a few suggestions, which, I am sure, would work out in practice so far as the unskilled workman is concerned. The Haast Pass road, in my opinion, is the most important of unfinished roads in the South Island to-day. If this road were pushed on with all speed and if on its completion a toll gate were erected and a substantial charge made on every car using the road, enough should be forthcoming to pay the interest on the expenditure. It would pay a motorist to give £5, provided he is able to have the round trip. Then again, look at the country that would be opened up. That road must be made some time, and why not go on with it, even if the money has to be borrowed for its construction? Another very important thing is the existence of the swamp lands that are at present lying dormant on a great man;y farms. It is a well-known fact that swamp lands, when drained, are the most productive of any land. It should be the duty of any Government to have this land brought under production. If the farmer refuses to move in the matter then the Government should have the work done and charged up to the land. About Dunedin there are hundreds ot building sites over-grown with gorse and broom." A number of these sections are owned by wealthy people. ' Why not insist on having this unsightly mess cleaned „p? _i a m. etc., Profitaiile Work. November 25.
