ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, and was attended by Messrs T. E. Turner (in the chair), C. A. Wilson, W. G. Reid, H. G. Williams, G. Howes, A. J. White, T. Long, J. Hutchison, XV. H. Wilson, S. H. Barnes, W. A. Ratfills, M. Barratt, R. Fountain. S. F. Aburn, and J. Maconie. GAME COMMITTEE. The Game Committee submitted the following report:— . The Department of Internal Allans wrote in connection with the society s case against Mr J. A. Forbes, of lawanui.— It was recommended that a reply be sent that the society will be out ot pocket over the ea.sc, and is disappointed at the decision of the Minister. The department also forwarded warrants appointing Messrs Edwin John Hamer, Jim., of Waikaia, and James Lavertv, of Taieri Beach, rangers under the Animals Protection and Game Act. —Received. , • .. - A further letter was received from the department asking for the society s recommendations for the 1036 game shootin"- season—lt i« recommended that the season for 1935-3 C be the same as last year, with the following additions:—that a season for pukeko be opened on May 1 for a fortnight; that a short season ot a fortnight be opened for chnkor from Jfav 1 with a daily limit of five, and a limit for the season of 25 birds; and that Finegand Lagoon be added to the list of excepted, areas. The report was adopted. PHEASANT COMMITTEE. The Pheasant Committee reported as f °T°he S: chairman (Mr R- Fountain) reported that during the day the committee had visited the hatchery and had found evervthtaf in good order, the pheasants looking particularly well. ANGLING COMMITTEE. The following report was submitted by the Angling Committee: — It i" recommended that Indert dam, Ranfurly, and the Naseby dams be restocked with fingerlings. . The report was adopted, the chairman remarking that liberations had been completed very expeditiously this year, the losses had 'been light, and the season very successful. . . A vote of thanks to Mr Maconie foi his work in this connection was passed. RESEARCH COMMITTEE. The chairman of the Research Committee (Mr J. Maconie) reported that the total-number of fry liberated this season between October 7 and November 21 was 035.000. the total loss being 1400, or .149 per cent, of the whole. The highest temperature recorded during transport was 63deg, and on the last trip the temperature at the hatchery was rising at 52deg. —The report was adopted. DIVERSION OF STREAMS. A letter was received from the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society in regard to the rights of acclimatisation" societies to waters containing acclimatised fish. The occasion had. arisen from the fact that a river trust had diverted a very important stream of water for the purpose of irrigation, and a resolution on the following lines was suggested:—"That this council views with alarm the diversion of waters carrying acclimatised fish, and urgently requests the Government to protect the activities of acclimatisation societies by refusing to grant permission for any diversion of such waters, or for the erection of any obstructions therein without first consulting the society in the district, and, further, that the Government does .not grant any rights of obstruction or diversion unless fish ladders of approved style are provided."; —It was decided to support the resolution.
