KILLED BY TRAIN

WALKED IN FRONT OF ENGINE DEAF MAN’S TERRIBLE FATE (Pep. United Press Association) . CHKISTCHURCH, November 3. Henry M'Causland, aged 57, a labourer, was killed instantaneously about 5 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, when he was struck by a mixed train at the Amberley crossing, M'Causland was stone deaf, and, though the driver sounded the whistle twice, M'Causland walked on to the line in front of the engine. He was carried 25 yards along the line and then fell off. He was dead when a doctor reached the place two minutes later. The crossing it not dangerous, and no accidents have happened there for a long time. No lights were burning on the train at the time, but the dead man should have been able to see 400 yards up the line in the direction from which the train was approaching.
