DOGS ATTACK SHEEP

LOSSES AROUND WELLINGTON STATION OWNERS PERTURBED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 2. According to a station owner sheepworrying by dogs has been very prevalent around Wellington during the past few weeks. On his place alone on Friday between 20 and 30 ewes were found killed outright as well as a number of lambs. On mustering, his ewes were found to be in a shocking condition. A neighbour had lost four stud ewes, all within an hour or two.The damage had obviously been done by a large dog. A shepherd had shot at and wounded an Alsatian in the act of worrying, but it had no collar or distinguishing marks. Two smaller dogs were with the Alsatian. The station owner said he understood that the dog that killed the stud sheep was found to be registered, but the owner was penniless and to sue would merely add to the loss. He added that the greatest curse of all was the pig dogs that were taken over the hills at week-ends by youths with little respect for people’s property or animals.
