ATHLETIC PROWESS

SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ MEETING FIVE NEW RECORDS ALLOWED SENIOR SHIELD TO WAITAKI The ninth annual Otago and Southland Secondary High Schools* Athletic Championships were held at Invercargill on Saturday. The weather, although dull, held fine, and a large gathering of spectators was present to witness the meeting, which was conducted under the auspices of the Southland Amateur Athletic Association. The track at Rugby Park was in practically ideal condition for all events. There was an absence of wind in the morning, but in the afternoon a southerly breete, blowing down the straight, prevented several excellent performances being recognised as records. The Senior Shield was retained by the Waitaki Boys’ High School with a total of 47 points. This is the third successive year the Oamaru school has won this section, which demonstrates the consistently high standard its athletes maintain. Southland Boys’ High School was runnermp with 23 points, and Otago Boys’ High School and St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru, tied for third position with 10-J points each. The Intermediate Shield was won by Otago Boys’ High School with 43 points, its nearest rivals being Waitaki Boys’ High School (14 points) and Southland Boys’ High School (10 points). A particularly fine performer in N. H. Welsh gave St. Kevin’s College the Junior Shield. This young athlete was the college’s only representative, ■'and by winning four events gained the trophy for his school. Soutliland Boys’ High School with 16 points, was runner-up, and Otago Boys’ High School, with 14 points, filled third position. The trophy for the best individual per- • formance in the senior division resulted in two Waitaki boys, H. W. Gowland and C. L. Morrison, tying for first place with 11 points. They were followed by P. A. Bay (10 points) and B. P. Hoffman (9 points). Otago Boys’ High School carried all before it in the intermediate section- I. M. Chandler annexed the medal with 15 points, and he was followed by his team-mates, C. M'Gregor (10 points) . and A. R. Duff (8 points). By winning four events, N. H. Welsh easily won the junior medal. No fewer than five new records. were established, and in five other cases the existing records were bettered. On account of the breeze, however, the latter could not be recognised as new records, but the performances in most cases, and especially in the 220 yards events, were practically unaffected by the wind, and gai»e an indication of the high standard of athletics that prevailed throughout the meeting. - In the senior division, the outstanding performance was that of P. A. Bay, who, in running the mile in 4min 54sec, established a new record 1 for the distance. He reduced the previous record held by J. R. Don (Otago Boys’ High School) by a full second. Both the sprints events were run in fast time, and produced exciting finishes. In the heats of the 100 Yards both B. P. Hoffman (St. Kevin’s), and H. E. Wilson (Waitaki), bettered the existing record, the former, who beat the pistol, covering the distance in 10 l-ssec, and the latter in 10 2-ssec. The final saw a great finish between Hoffman and Gowland, the latter being awarded the race by inches.Gowland also ran a brilliant race to win the 220 Yards. Three new records were allowed in the intermediate division, all being established by the Otago Boys’ High School team. I. M. Chandler, who is joint-holder of the school’s senior championship, bettered the . record for the High Jump by two and ahalf inches with a leap of sft 3in. _C. M'Gregor, the school’s brilliant junior champion, ran the 440 Yards in the fast time of 56 2-ssec —three-fifths of a second better than the previous record. The school’s team also broke the record for the 880 Yards Relay Race by the large margin of 1 4-ssec. Other good performances in the intermediate division were recorded by M'Curdy in the 120 Yards Hurdles, Duff and M'Gregor, both of whom bettered the existing record in the 220 Yards, and by Chandler in the Long Jump. None of these will be allowed by the Otago Centre, but it appeared that most of these athletes could have lowered the records without the advantage of a wind, slight as it was.. The outstanding performer in the junior events was N. H.' Welsh (St. Kevin’s College), who won all the four events in which he competed. He also established a new record for the 440 Yards'with the time of 60sec—two-fifths of a second better than the previous record. Both Welsh and Pedlar equalled the record for the 100 Yards, and the former covered the 220 Yards in twofifths of a second less than the existing record. At the conclusion of the sports the shields were presented to the winning teams by the Mayor of Invercargill (Mr John Miller). ...
