SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY

IMPROVEMENT ON THE .CLYDE FORTY NEW SHIPS ORDERED (British Official Wireless) ' RUGBY, October 31. (Received Nov. 1, at 5.5 p.m.) During the last three months orders for more than 40 new ships have been booked by the Clyde shipbuilding industry and tenders are out for other contracts. The orders secured in October alone are estimated at £4,000,000. It is calculated that by the spring of next year Clyde shipyards will have over 400,000 tons gross of new tonnage on hand. The improvement, which calls forth memories of the brisk trade enjoyed by Clydeside in the years after 1918, is most welcome in a locality which suffered severely in the earlier part of the depression.
