KUROW NOTES Omarama Rodeo There was an excellent attendance of spectators and competitors at the annual Omarama rodeo. The weather was fine, and the secretaries (Messrs Thomas and Taylor) are to be congratulated on the excellent way they carreid out the progrcmme. Struthers and Mr Delargy special prizes. At the conclusion of the sporting events a dance was held in the evening in the Omarama Hall. Mra A. F. T. Munro (wife of the president) presented the prizes. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Lawn Tennis The results of the matches of the Eastera Southland lawn tennis competition played on Wednesday are as follows: — A Grade: Gore defeated Citizens, on the Citizen's courts, by 10 sets (89 games) to six sets (83 games). B Grade St. Andrew's defeated Edendale, on the St. Andrew's courts, by 12 sets (116 fames) to four sets (58 games), St. 'atrick's defeated Gore, on the Gore courts, by 11 sets (102 games) to five sets (78 games); Mataura defeated Anglican, at Mataura. by 13 seta (106 games) to two sets* (47 games). Cricket The Eastern Southland Wednesday cricket competition was commenced this week in ideal weather conditions. Playing at the hostel, Gore B defeated Gore A by a margin of 31 runs in a low-scoring match. The B team batted first and scored 68 (J. Davidson 22). Thompson took two wickets for two runs, Kirby two for two. The A team then batted and fared poorly, being all out for 37. (Kirby not out 11). J. Currie took five wickets for six runs, Kerr, five for 14.
Gore Defence Rifle Club At the annual meeting of the Gore Defence Rifle Club on Wedneday evening the following office-bearers were elected:—Patron, Mr R. B. Bannerman; president, Mr C. M. Wilson; vice-presi-dents—Messrs S. Preece, G. Bain, G. L. Sadd, C. R. Wilkinson; secretary and treasurer. Mr W. D. Milne; committee — Messrs P. Hay, W. Cunningham, H. Mason, J. Catto, A. R. Williamson; auditor, Mr C. R. Wilkinson; range warden, Mr W. Cunningham; handicappers— Messrs C. M. Wilson, S. Preece, and G. Bain; delegates to Southland Association, Messrs Wilson and Milne; delegates to Gore District Association, Messrs Sadd and Milne.
Personal Citizens of Mataura, representative of all sections of the community assembled in the Oddfellows' Hall, Mataura, on Wednesday evening, to bid farewell to Constable E. J. Murphy and Mrs Murphy, who will leave shortly on transfer to P.anfurly. The Mayor (Mr J. Buchanan) presided, and, after a short speech, presented Mr and Mrs Murphy with a handsome chiming clock and a Chesterfield suite on behalf of the citizens of the town. Missis A. Smyth, A. L. Dolamore (Gore), J. Kurt, C. D. M'Connell, F. N. R. Downaid, I. G. Boyd, W. N. Dunnage, J. M'AUlster, A. J. Cruickshank, J. R. Quiiter, J. M'Erlean, and Mrs R. Hutton a) 1 voiced appreciation of the work accomplished by the guests of honour. In reply, Mr Murphy stated that he had spent 11J years at Mataura, and he had the belief that he had never been harsh with anyone. He desired to thank the Mayor and his predecessor (Mr C. D. M'Connell), the managers of industrial corcerns, local justices, and members of the legal profession who had contrived to make his work pleasant. Items were contributed by Mr S. Bringans and Mr O. Hulener during the evening.
