LAWRENCE
Bowling Club The Lawrence Bowling Club opened its green for the season on Labour Day There was a good attendance of members, also players from Waitahuna and Miller's Flat. The president (Mr R. C. Moore) extended a welcome to visitors. The time-honoured opening match, President v. Vice-president, resulted in a win for the former by 81 to 68. Angling Local fishermen report that fairly successful bags have been obtained recently. Two local anglers report having caught a bag of 40 fish on Labour Day. Other reported results are patchy, but the Pomahaka River seems to be the favourite fishing rendezvous for the local fishermen. Sale of Work The Lawrence Presbyterian Bible class held a sale of work on Wednesday after noon and evening for funds for missions. The Mayor (Mr R. F. Batehelor) opened the sale and wished the promoters success in their cause. The usual stalls were conducted and a musical programme and competitions in the evening helped to make the function attractive, with the result that the sum of £25 was realised. Personal The Rev. Mr Barton, moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly of New Zealand, and Mrs Barton have left Lawrence for Wellington for the opening of the assembly on Tuesday.
