FRENCH GOVERNMENT

THE ECONOMY MEASURES AMENDED BY COMMITTEE LONDON, October 30. It is expected in Paris that M. Laval will make a supreme effort for conciliation at Geneva, as diplomatic success is essential to the stability cf his Government, which is threatened by domestic dangers. The Finance Committee tore M. Laval's economy programme to shreds and passed amendments to the Budget reducing savings by at least 50 per cent. They agreed to special exemptions for small taxpayers, and abandonment of certain war pension and other cuts, which will cost the Government at least £40,000,000. M. Laval intends to contest the amendments in Parliament, and a grave struggle is expected in the next few weeks. SHIPPING SERVICE CUT OUT LONDON, October 30. (Received Oct. 31, at 8 p.m.) The Times Paris correspondent says M. Lebrun has signed a decree suppressing forthwith the steamship service to Australia operated by the Messageries Maritimes. This will result in an annual saving of £130,000.
