"REVEREND CARPET BAGGERS"

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I hear that the Reverend "Carpet Baggers," who do not receive a "call" from the electors to a seat in Parliament at £4OO a year, with a free railway pass and other pickings, are reserving the right to receive another call from above to the high callings they are now relinquishing. It is a sudden drop from the pulpit to a soapbox in Queen's Park, but one cannot altogether • blame them for trying to keep one foot on fertile although poorish soil before plunging into the quicksands of politics. There is no accounting for the tastes or actions of some, but I notice that their brethren of the cloth have little to say on the subject. —I am, etc., An Observer. Oamaru, October 30.
