LABOUR DAY SPORTS

GATHERING AT MACLENNAN The annual Labour Day sports meeting was held on the Maclennan School Grounds yesterday in splendid weather and there was a record attendance. The events were keenly contested and some very close finishes were_ witnessed. The bush-craft events, especially, drew large entries, and this necessitated the holding of a number of heats. Great credit is due to the officials for the manner in which the meeting was conducted, as the events were run off with despatch and the large programme was concluded well up to time. The Railways Department is to be congratulated on the convenience of the train arrangements and the train was very well patronised. The judges of the" bush-craft events were Messrs D. Murphy, J. R. White, and P. Laughton. Mr H. Latta was the starter and Mr T. Munro timekeeper. The Highland dancing, a new item on the programme, greatly interested the crowd. Mr R. J. Hornall, of Dunedin, was the piper, and Mr Bennett, of Puketiro, was the judge. Mr J. G. Leckie was in charge of the field events and Mr R. Frazer made an efficient bellman.
